Abstract
The World Wide Web is evolving towards an infrastructure where services that are massively consumed by applications running on a great variety of devices manipulate an important amount of distributed semantic information. This evolution requires infrastructures that avoid semantic islands creation, prevents the centralization of the produced semantic information and makes it possible the interoperation among heterogeneous semantic repositories. In this paper we introduce, formalize, and implement the notion of Semantic RDF Federation as an infrastructure that enables the correlation (linkage), replication and seamless navigation of distributed semantic RDF information that is privately owned and stored on heterogeneous repositories. Our infrastructure makes use of standard technologies like XML, RDF and Web Services guaranteeing extensibility and interoperation with other existing frameworks. We discuss an implementation based on .NET Web Services and present some interesting experimental results related to this technology that prove its adequacy for integration of heterogeneous systems.
